Sri Sankardev Samaj was established at Nagaon, Undivided Kamrup district (now Barpeta district) of Western Assam in the year of 1985 by the collaborative effort of former Chief Minister of Assam and former Governor of Punjab Late Mahendra Mohan Choudhury with his associate Late Bimala Prasad Chaliha, Late Bishnuram Medhi, Late Fakaruddin Ahmed, Haladhar Bhuyan, Matiram Bora, Bagmibar Nilamoni Phukan, Mitradev Mahanta, Gahan Ch. Goswami. The main objective of this organization was to established Cultural Centre, Namghar, Library, Yatri Niwas, Satriya Art and Culture, Research Centre of Performing Art, School and Hospital to promote and extension of consecrated the religion and Satriya art and culture of Srimanta Sankardeva. Afterwards this institution is relocate from Nagaon to Guwahati .Sri Sankardeva Cultural society is an Assam government registered organisation – no 17 of the year of 1960-61.
The first step of Sri Sankardeva cultural society accepted PURI PROJECT by the help of than Chief Minister of Orissa Dr.Harekrishna Mehtab and than after Chief Minister Janaki Ballav Patnaik and favour of Late Gopal Krisna Mahapatra. After facing too many struggles, on 25-03-1984 an Executive Committee of 15 persons were formed under the president ship of Dr. Birendra Nath Choudhury and General Secretary Nabadeep Ranjan Patgiri in the effort of Justice Dambarudhar Pathak after taking charge of Chief Justice of Orissa. The first step of new committee they constructed a new room where they established GURU ASANA and start praise and prayers on 12-07-1984.
During the period of Retired Chief justice Dambarudhar Pathak as a President of Sri Sankardeva cultural society, rebuild a three story Yatri Niwas, Canteen and Namghar for the help of Pilgrims.
In the general meeting held on 21-01-2001, an executive committee of 19 persons were formed where Justice Dambarudhar Pathak as a president, Sri Satish Taukdar as a General Secretary and Late Dalim Pathak as a treasures of the Organisation. And that committee celebrated PURI MAHOTSAV from 2002. At present the executive committee of 36 person’s fairy executed this organization under the guidance of President Smt. Kanika Pathak, General Secretary Birendra Nath Pathak and Treasurer Laksman Ojha.
