Pal Naam
Pal Nam is a sacred, continuous congregational chanting of the name of God in rotation. Rooted in the Neo-Vaishnavite culture of Assam, it was initiated by the saints Srimanta Sankardeva and Madhavadeva to foster spiritual unity, harmony, and peace. Groups of devotees and monks (bhakats) sing the prayers in shifts, ensuring an unbroken, continuous spiritual atmosphere. The Name “Pal” means by turns, and “Naam” means the chanting of God’s name (primarily from the Naam Ghosha and Bhagavata). It was originally started by Srimanta Sankardeva to pray for the safe return of his disciple, Madhavadeva, and to promote social well-being.
